THE PERIPHERY

the frame is the transition

What you are looking at

This page is framed by the thing it describes. The border around it is not a stroke — it is a volume, and it is populated. Move the pointer toward any edge and the aspect docked there opens as you approach; the motion pixels pool where you are reaching.

Try it. Move toward a corner — a menu opens before you arrive. Open one fully and watch the letters of DELTAVERSE behind this text: the letter belonging to that dock grows a subdivision. Press LISTEN and the page reads itself; then use D · verse to hold, skip and go back, and T · time to change the pace of the reading. Nothing here is a mock-up.

The transition between frames

The substrate does not cut from one thing to the next. Between two frames the motion pixels living on the four-sided periphery leave it and return to the centre; at the instant the centre is full the frame says so, and that is when what is playing is swapped. Then they issue back out around whatever arrived. Out, in, swap, in, out.

Nothing that plays has to know how this works. The frame announces that the centre is full; the page swaps then.

Light is conserved through the move: centre plus periphery equals one, so as the pixels drain inward the rules dim by exactly what the centre gains. The frame hands its light over rather than cross-fading, which is a different thing to watch and a truer one.

The geometry, in x y z

The outer rule stands at z = 1, the viewport inset by the border pad, nearest you. The inner rule stands at z = 1/√2. The centre is the origin, at z = 0. The volume between the rules is the border zone, joined by eight spokes — a frustum whose apex is the centre.

A station's depth is derived from its place and never dialled: z = |(x, y)| / √2, so a corner lands at exactly one and an edge midpoint at 0.7071. The projection is a real perspective divide, k(z) = C / (C − z), normalised so the outer rule sits precisely on the inset. A pixel travelling from one to zero therefore recedes while it converges: the return to the centre is a collapse in three axes, not a slide in two.

Nine aspects, one per letter

Eight menus are docked around the border in ring order, and the centre is carried as the reference rather than as a dock. That is nine, counted zero through eight, one for each letter of D E L T A V E R S — and the tenth letter, the closing E, is the footer, which closes the word the way a footer closes a document. Head, body and footer are the frame's own zoning.

The menu is the letter. A dock's openness is that letter's charge, and a menu opened all the way advances its letter one subdivision in the mark — capped by the same device limit as maturity, so a slow phone is never talked into a mesh it cannot hold, and rate limited, so a letter cannot be pumped by waving the pointer at its dock.

The participant model

Under A · ai there is a model of you, and it is small enough to be honest about: a contextual bandit with a Beta–Bernoulli posterior per mode and family, sampled by Thompson sampling, running entirely in this browser. Nothing is uploaded, no model is downloaded, and the whole state is a few dozen numbers you can read and delete.

It decides three things, in ascending order of liberty. It sets the pace — how long a thing holds. It weights the transition — how heavily the frame returns to the centre. And, only if you ask it to follow you, it reorders the fillers of a bundle, leaving the verb, the ground, the membership and the emerged theme exactly as they were. It will not reorder bundles and it will not substitute a substrate; those are the sequence's to decide, not the model's. Ask it why and it will tell you, in words, in the footer.

Springs, derived

For the step used here, critical damping is exactly (1 + D − D·K)² = 4D, so K = (1 + D − 2√D) / D. With D = 1/φ that gives K = 0.0740: zero overshoot, settled in twenty-seven frames. The centre is a reference, not a trampoline — a pixel that sails past the origin and comes back reads as a bounce.
